全米社会調査（GSS）は、現代アメリカ社会に関するデータを収集し、態度、行動、属性における傾向と恒常性を監視・説明することを目的としています。1972年以降、何百もの傾向が追跡されています。さらに、GSSは以前の調査の質問を採用しているため、最大70年間の傾向を追跡することができます。
GSSには、人口統計学的、行動的、態度的な質問の標準的なコア部分と、特別な関心の対象となるトピックが含まれています。取り上げられるトピックには、公民権、犯罪と暴力、集団間寛容、道徳、国の支出優先順位、心理的幸福感、社会的流動性、ストレスとトラウマ的出来事などがあります。
