ブラジルでは2年ごとに選挙が行われますが、2種類の異なる選挙が交互に行われ、それぞれの種類の選挙は4年ごとに行われます。市長や市議会議員が選出される地方選挙（前回は2016年に行われました）と、大統領、州知事、上院議員、議員（地方および全国）が選出される総選挙（前回は2014年に行われました）があります。ブラジルには26の連邦州と連邦特別区があります。これらの各州（地域）では、上院議員、議員、州知事が選出されます。
各連邦州について、ブラジルの選挙最高裁判所（TSE）は、候補者、政党、委員会という3つの主体が申告した寄付に関する情報を提供しています。このデータには、受け取ったすべての寄付に関する情報が含まれています。寄付は、寄付者に関して2つのカテゴリに分けることができます。自然人（CPF（CPFはブラジルの税務署が使用する識別番号です。おおよそ米国の社会保障番号に相当します。同じ目的で、企業はCNPJ番号と呼ばれる同様の番号で識別されます）で識別される個人）からの寄付か、法人（すなわち、CNPJ番号で識別される企業）からの寄付です。また、一部の主体は相互に寄付を行うことができます（政党が特定の寄付からの一部の資金を候補者に渡すことができます）。この種の取引では、元の寄付者に関する情報も申告書に明記されます。これ以降、この種の寄付を非元寄付と呼びます。各ブラジル連邦州に関する個別の情報の他に、政党や委員会が全国レベルで申告した情報や大統領選挙キャンペーン（地域的な範囲ではなく全国的な範囲を対象とする）に関する情報も取得することができます。
