データジャーナリズムは、扱うデータ量が多いときに最も効果的です。ウィキリークスによるイラク戦争記録の公開により、約39万1000件のイラク戦争に関する記録が公にされました。私たちは数週間の間これらのデータを持っていますが、何がわかったでしょうか？
これはウィキリークスによるアフガニスタン関連の情報漏洩とは別次元のものです。この新たな公開により、この戦争が歴史上最も詳細に記録された戦争になったと言っても良いでしょう。あらゆる些細な詳細が今や私たちが分析し分解するために用意されていますが、一つの要素が際立っています。それは膨大な死傷者数であり、その多くは民間人です。
いくつかの重要な調査結果：
総死亡者数
・この期間中の総死亡者数はデータベースによると10万9032人です。
・データベースに記録されている死亡者数は以下の通りです。民間人6万6081人、反政府勢力2万3984人、イラク治安部隊1万5196人。
・最も多くの死者が出た場所はバグダッドで4万5497人で、次いでバグダッドからクルド地域までの地域である北部多国部隊管轄地域（MND north）で3万4210人の死者が出ました。最も死者が少なかったのは北東部で、わずか328人でした。
殺害事件と武力行使の拡大
・2万4840件の事件で3万4814人が殺害されたと記録されています。
・最も多くの殺害事件が起きた月は2006年12月で2566件で、最も多くの殺害事件が起きた年は2006年で1万6870件でした。
・データベースには1万2578件の武力行使拡大事件（例えば、検問所で速度過多で走行している人が射殺される事件など）が記録されており、これらにより778人の死亡が記録されています。
即時起爆装置（IED）
・この期間中に6万5439回のIED爆発があり、データベースにはそれだけで3万1780人の死亡が記録されています。
・さらに4万4620個のIEDが発見され撤去されました。
・最も多くのIED爆発が起きた月は2007年5月で2080回のIED爆発がありました。
