ビットコインや他の暗号通貨は、技術者、金融家、経済学者たちの想像力を引きつけています。デジタル通貨は、その基盤となるブロックチェーン技術の応用例の一つに過ぎません。その前身であるビットコインと同様に、イーサリアムのブロックチェーンは不変の分散型台帳として説明することができます。しかし、創始者のヴィタリック・ブテリン氏は、ブロックチェーン上に保存された任意のコードをスマートコントラクトとして実行できる仮想マシンを組み込むことで、機能セットを拡張しました。
ビットコインとイーサリアムは本質的にはOLTPデータベースであり、OLAP（分析）機能をほとんど提供していません。しかし、イーサリアムのデータセットはビットコインのデータセットと明らかに異なります。
イーサリアムのブロックチェーンはイーサを主要な価値単位としていますが、ビットコインのブロックチェーンはビットコインを主要な価値単位としています。しかし、イーサリアムのブロックチェーン上での価値移転の大部分は、いわゆるトークンで構成されています。トークンはスマートコントラクトによって作成され、管理されます。
イーサの価値移転は、会計帳簿の借方と貸方のように正確で直接的です。これは、与えられたウォレットアドレスの残高を特定するのが難しいビットコインの価値移転メカニズムと対照的です。アドレスは残高を保有するウォレットだけでなく、スマートコントラクトのバイトコードも含むことができ、プログラムによってプロトコルを作成し、その実行を自動的にトリガーすることができます。一連の協調するスマートコントラクトを使用して、分散型自治組織を構築することができます。
