暗号化技術を利用して偽造や不正取引を防止し、デジタル形式でのみ存在するあらゆる通貨形態は、暗号通貨と定義されます。ビットコインは最初の暗号通貨です。2009年に、中本聡と名乗る匿名の個人またはグループによって発明されました。誰かがビットコイン（またはビットコインの一部）を他の人に送ると、「マイナー」がその取引をブロックに記録し、デジタル台帳に追加します。これらのブロックはまとめてブロックチェーンと呼ばれ、ビットコインで行われたすべての取引の公開された台帳です。ブロックチェーンは多数のコンピュータに分散されているため、取引記録を改ざんすることができません。マイニングできるビットコインは最大2100万枚で、現在までに約1700万枚がマイニングされています。ビットコインは、人々（マイナー）がコンピュータで数学的問題を解くことで生成され、台帳を更新および検証します。
