このデータセットは、ルイス・トルゴ（ポルト大学）のページから入手できるカリフォルニア住宅データセットの改訂版です。ルイス・トルゴは、これをStatLibリポジトリ（現在は閉鎖されています）から取得しました。このデータセットは、StatLibのミラーサイトからもダウンロードできます。
このデータセットは、1997年に「Statistics and Probability Letters」誌に掲載された、レイ・ケリー・ペイスとロナルド・バリーによる「Sparse Spatial Autoregressions」という論文に登場しました。彼らは、1990年のカリフォルニア州の国勢調査データを使用してこのデータセットを構築しました。このデータセットには、各国勢調査ブロックグループに対応する1行が含まれています。ブロックグループは、米国国勢調査局がサンプルデータを公開する最小の地理的単位です（ブロックグループの人口は通常600人から3000人です）。
調整点
このディレクトリ内のデータセットは、元のデータセットとほぼ同一ですが、2点の違いがあります。
「total_bedrooms」列から207個の値がランダムに削除されています。これにより、欠損データの扱いについて議論できます。
「ocean_proximity」という追加のカテゴリ属性が追加されています。これは、非常に大まかに、各ブロックグループが海の近く、湾岸地域の近く、内陸、または島にあるかどうかを示します。これにより、カテゴリデータの扱いについて議論できます。
なお、Jupyterノートブックでは、ブロックグループが「地区」と呼ばれています。これは、ある状況では「ブロックグループ」という名称が混乱を招くためです。
