# 内容
戦争相関（COW）プロジェクトでは、領土主体の地位に基づいた戦争の分類を用いており、特に国際システムの構成員として分類される主体に焦点を当てています。戦争は、主に国家間、国家と非国家主体間、および国内で起こるかどうかによって分類されています。
COWの戦争類型論では、国際戦争、国内戦争、または国外戦争は、すべての戦争に共通の定義要件を満たさなければなりません。つまり、戦争は組織化された武装勢力が関与する持続的な戦闘を伴い、12か月以内に少なくとも1000人の戦闘関連の戦死者が出る必要があります。ある国家が戦争参加国と見なされるためには、最低限、1000人の軍隊を戦争に投入するか、100人以上の戦闘関連の死者を出す必要があります。
戦争相関の学者であるJ.デイビッド・シンガーとメルビン・スモールが、『武力行使』において戦争研究を国内戦争にまで拡大した際、彼らは、紛争が戦争となるための必要条件として、双方が「有効な抵抗」を行う能力を持つ武装勢力が関与しなければならないと定めました。その後、彼らは有効な抵抗を定義するための2つの代替基準を策定しました。「双方が最初から暴力的な紛争に備えて組織化され、敵の攻撃に抵抗する用意があること、または、弱い側が最初は準備ができていなかったとしても、強い敵に対して自らが被る死者数の少なくとも5％の死者を与えることができること」です。有効な抵抗基準は、特に、戦争を虐殺、一方的な国家による殺害、または無組織な個人による一般的な暴動と区別するために用いられました。
