BigEarthNetアーカイブは、ベルリン工科大学（TU Berlin）のリモートセンシング画像分析（RSiM）グループとデータベースシステムと情報管理（DIMA）グループによって構築されました。この作業は、欧州研究評議会のBigEarth起動資金とベルリン学習とデータ基盤研究所（BIFOLD）の支援を受けています。BIFOLDに先立ち、ベルリンビッグデータセンター（BBDC）がこの作業を支援していました。
BigEarthNetは、590,326対のSentinel - 1とSentinel - 2画像パッチで構成されるベンチマークアーカイブです。BigEarthNetの最初のバージョン（v1.0 - beta）は、Sentinel 2画像のみを含んでいました。最近、Sentinel - 1画像が追加され、マルチモーダルなBigEarthNetベンチマークアーカイブ（BigEarthNet - MMとも呼ばれます）が作成されました。
