連邦捜査局（FBI）の統一犯罪報告（UCR）プログラムでは、暴力犯罪は4種類の犯罪で構成されています。それらは、殺人及び過失致死、強姦、強盗、重傷害です。UCRプログラムでは、暴力犯罪を武力または武力の脅しを伴う犯罪と定義しています。>>『アメリカの犯罪』に掲載されているデータは、等級規則を反映しています。この規則では、複数の犯罪が含まれる刑事事件では、最も重大な犯罪のみをカウントすることが求められています。UCRにおける暴力犯罪の降順は、殺人及び過失致死、強姦、強盗、重傷害で、その次に侵入窃盗、窃盗、自動車窃盗などの財産犯罪が続きます。放火も財産犯罪の一種ですが、等級規則は放火罪には適用されません。放火が他の暴力犯罪または財産犯罪と同時に発生した場合、放火とその他の犯罪の両方が報告されます。
