MNISTは機械学習コミュニティで広く使われているデータセットです。私が機械学習の学習を始めたとき、MNISTデータセットに様々な機械学習モデルを試し、またKarpathyのConvnetjsなど他人の結果も分析しました。私は人間がいくつかの「下手な」手書き文字で誤りを犯すことに気づきました。CNNはこれらを正しく予測できますが、いくつかの「きれいな」手書き文字で誤りを犯します。私は訓練データセットの「下手な」手書き文字がCNNに学習され、一部の「下手な」手書き文字を正しく予測する代わりに、一部の「きれいな」手書き文字を誤って予測することを証明しました。同時に、訓練データセットとテストデータセットに誤ってラベル付けされたインスタンスがあることを発見し、これはMNISTに関する現在の最先端技術が正確ではないことを証明しています。NIST SDデータセットがどのように作成されたかを分析することで、NISTにもMNISTにも不確定性があることを発見しました。MNISTには誤ってラベル付けされたインスタンスや不確定なインスタンスがあるので、テストデータセットでの正確性のみを基準とするのは適切ではありません。別のMNISTを作成する方が良いかもしれません。これをMNIST拡張と呼びましょう。これには60000個の正しい訓練インスタンスと10000個の正しいテストインスタンス、さらに100個の誤った訓練インスタンス、1000個の不確定な訓練インスタンス、1000個の不確定なテストインスタンスが含まれます。このようなデータセットを使うことで、正しいデータセットでの正確性の結果をより正確に得ることができ、また、誤った訓練インスタンスや不確定な訓練インスタンスを使ってモデルを評価し、モデルが不確定なテストインスタンスをどのように予測するかを評価することができます。
