このデータセットには、2014年に北極海に近いスバールバル諸島西部海域で、海洋調査船「ヘルマー・ハンセン」号を使って測定された、海と大気中の二酸化炭素、メタン、およびその他の関連物質の濃度の記録が含まれています。
主な目的は、二酸化炭素の吸収とメタン放出の関係を調査することで、浅い大陸棚から放出されるメタンが地球温暖化に大きく寄与する可能性がある一方で、近傍の生物の光合成による二酸化炭素吸収の増強によって相殺される可能性があることを示すことでした。
