細胞分裂速度の違いや、細胞分裂の各段階で費やす時間の違いは、正常細胞とがん細胞を区別する重要な要素です（Sherr 1996、Visconti 2016）。同様に、がん細胞は細胞分裂中にしばしば誤った有糸分裂構造を形成し、これらの誤った構造がさらなる病気の進行に寄与することがあります（Milunović - Jevtić 2016、Bakhoum 2018）。そのため、細胞分裂とそのメカニズムの研究は、数多くの抗がん薬の開発につながっています（Florian 2016、Steinmetz 2018）。
