産業化以降、環境汚染に対する懸念が高まっています。世界保健機関（WHO）の報告書「大気汚染に関連する年間700万人の早期死亡」（http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/releases/2014/air-pollution/en/ ）に記載されているように、大気汚染は世界最大の単一環境リスクです。さらにニューヨークタイムズの記事「インドの大気汚染は中国に匹敵し、世界で最も致命的」（https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/14/world/asia/indias-air-pollution-rivals-china-as-worlds-deadliest.html?_r=0 ）で報告されているように、インドの大気汚染は中国のものよりもさらに致命的であることがわかっています。
